Chapter 13

Riley

The door to the van swings open, Tricia jumps down, and the sun blinds me as it rises over the five-story building of the PDU. Windows are nearly unbreakable; the concrete façade is several feet thick; armed guards protect every entrance, as if the PDU is a concrete sarcophagus. More, it’s evident Tricia is in danger.

Hide her. Protect her. The duty slams into me, but what if I can’t? The hairs running the length of my spine stand on end and a perpetual growl begs to be released. Where once the PDU gave me purpose, home to top military officials, and resources up the yang, I’m fearing that direction is about to change. In the light, I give Tricia a sideways glance, my body still tingling from the pleasure she gave me inside the van. But each touch, each taste, I believe her power and magic is fast-forwarding my transition to becoming the very thing that hunts her: Vampire.

Any lingering warmth I’m feeling turns icy, and I shiver in the heat of the humid day, hoping the other officers haven’t noticed the changes in me. Discreetly, I search the grounds as we march toward the entrance, hunting for a way to get Tricia to safety if she should need to escape without me. It’s a scenario I hadn’t thought about until today.

Guards pepper the facility, and there’s a unit stationed at the gate that leads toward the back of the building where the fleet cars are located. Once we’re inside the building, there’s no way out but through the rush of officers or the protected fleet, which gets me thinking.

General Kane lands his weighted hand on my shoulder, instantly halting my thoughts.

“We have business that needs discussing. Important business, and I’ll need your full attention.”

Panic surges inside my gut, as if warning me that the general is up to something other than debriefing me on a hot lead, but what? Is he expecting me to ditch Tricia? Has he learned I’ve been aggressively hunting for my men? Is he using the lure of recovering them as a way to trick me into divulging Tricia’s identity as the princess he’s been searching for, having knowledge of our prior relationship?

He gives my shoulder a squeeze before advancing ahead of me.

I’d question him, but I’ve respected him—he saved me—and I still feel like I owe him the benefit of a doubt when it comes to him plotting against me in some way.

Then there’s Tricia. If I share my suspicions with her and spike fear in her, she could lose her control. There’d be no way to hide her identity. I palm her lower back as she’s walking in front of me, pressing my fingers into the jacket of mine she’s wearing. The idea of severing my connection with her becomes unfathomable the closer we get to the entrance, but I know panicking on my part will only deepen our risk. I won’t advance danger any more than I already am. Except as she climbs the steps with her head held high, I realize that she’s done fine without me.
